I think this information is now quite out of date. You’re now more likely to be charged around USD$35 for a taxi from the airport to Copacabana – that’s if you don’t get the special ‘gringo’(tourist) rate. If you want a fixed rate taxi then these can be booked at the airport, or with companies such as Rio Airport Transfer (www.rioairporttransfer.com). These companies are more expensive than the traditional taxis, but you have the advantage of knowing the price prior to getting into the cab.
tend to agree with the above. 2009 prices will see you pay up to usd$60 for a better quality transfer to Copacabana, or usd$40 for a standard yellow cab. Remember, Brazil’s economy has been doing well while others haven’t, therefore their currency is now quite strong against many others.
Beware of the ‘gringo price’, although not as common as in the past, it still exists. I would suggest pre-paying for services either online or through your travel agent before getting here. You might pay a little more, but then again you might save a lot if a local trys to rip you off.
